Raphael House of Portland

Listen. Believe. Speak Out.

There are over 20,000 requests for domestic violence shelter in Oregon every year that go unmet due to a lack of space and resources. And the Raphael House of Portland has provided a foundation of hope for a life free from domestic violence since 1977.

WK+12 commends the work of Raphael House of Portland and plans to graciously give donations provided by Target to No Place Like Home.

Art Show Eve

Things are really rolling into place here, as we have just one night left and one day until the big show.

Jamie has been scoring cardboard and trimming round, aerodynamic shapes out. Almost the size of a vehicle of some kind. Hmm.

Casey and Beth have been working with very large pegboards. Each hole was hand drilled, with an electric drill. Crazy! We like it harder, it will pay off.

In our windows we have hung curtains, and some new widows as well, on the other side. A message is now displayed to the street. People are gathering. The party invitation is out.

We want to take a moment and thank Target for donating so many awesome things to our space: tables, lamps, pillows, beds, blankets, snacks, drinks. We couldn't have made it through this without them.

Remember, party starts at 6pm. See you guys then!

You're coming, right?

Call out of work.

Leave work early.

Show up to the party.

Balance

The best advice I got before starting 12 was, "Don't kid yourself. You may pay rent somewhere else but if you do 12, you live at work." It's true. This place has been my life for the past 8 months. We always joke about how much we are here and usually that laughter is in self preservation. That may sound extreme but being able to laugh in 12 is what gets you through 3am mockups of a sandwich, critiques with Jim Riswold, and yet another failed relationship.

When we decided to move into the foyer, we were once again laughing at our commitment but with every chuckle we were also questioning it. What the fuck am I doing? For me this move in was more than, "Well if I can't go home, I'll bring home to me." It was to see what would happen to me if I stayed. And to my surprise, I miss my real home. I miss the stupid things like drinking tea on my top balcony, throwing the bag so it catches in the tree branches or the way my wallpaper curls back in the corners of my bathroom. I miss my roommate and his endless optimism. I miss my bed and my the way the logs smell in my wood iron stove.

In these final 3 months of 12, maybe my greatest challenge isn't piling on the hours. Maybe it's finding balance. Getting out of here and finding inspiration in the little things again.

New day new mess

Our second full day living here, and everyone's projects are in full swing.

Hand painted signs are the new Twitter.

Panda is watching you.

The great thing about this space is that it's constantly changing. Yesterday we had a kitchen table in the middle of the room. Today it's a stack of wood pallets. Yesterday we had a tent. Today we have an iPad.

The bad thing about the space is that keeping track of 12 people's belongings plus art supplies and tools and laptops and cameras and cups is almost impossible. Whereas communal computer chargers makes sense, communal toothbrushes and wine glasses are trouble.

It's a mess. Just like home.

Sleeping in the agency for the second night was harder than the first night. After a Monday of painting and furniture swapping, everyone was deathly tired, but the full day’s adrenaline was competing with the exhaustion.

Looking up into the beams above the 3rd floor, it felt huge and scary in the living space. It was overwhelming, just as it felt on the very first day of 12. And there was time to pause and wonder again what we’re doing, and think about the projects that need to be finished. Too many thoughts.

At night the wall of black & white portraits seemed like haunted house photos, every one gazing at me with some peculiar message in the 3am dim. They were benevolent apparitions though, a family of quirky conspirators.

In the morning, they were the first thing I saw and it was a nice way to wake up.

Our Manifesto

What We Brought

Mike Wilson suggested we post some of the objects we have populated our new home with. Here are some of them.
